  • About the artist

Eric Guéna was born on November 25, 1953, in Louvres, Val d’Oise, France. From an early age, he felt a strong urge not only to observe the world around him, but also to depict it. His artistic path was shaped by a curiosity that took him far beyond the borders of his native region.

At the age of twenty, he traveled to Asia for the first time, where he immersed himself in traditional techniques deeply rooted in the cultures of countries like Japan and China. He learned the refinement of sumi-e (Japanese ink painting), the layering of lacquer painting, the decorative gold leaf technique, and the precision of Japanese screen printing. At the same time, he began restoring old artworks, through which he discovered not only the aesthetics but also the soul of these traditions.

This period laid the foundation for his later work, in which Eastern and Western influences merge. Guéna developed a style in which the clarity and composition of Western painting go hand in hand with the subtlety and spirituality of Eastern traditions. His paintings are often constructed as collages of techniques and atmospheres, in which movement, silence, light, and depth alternate.

In France and abroad, he gained fame with exhibitions in which his art was praised for the way it bridges cultures. His work invites contemplation, yet simultaneously possesses a vibrancy that is immediately appealing.

Besides being a painter, Eric Guéna is also a researcher of image and meaning. He continues to explore the interplay between tradition and modernity, between heritage and innovation. This makes him an artist who not only creates images but also opens a dialogue about how art reflects and enriches human existence.
