- About the artist
Onno Boerwinkel is a Dutch artist known for his tranquil and layered works, which focus on the Mediterranean light and the everyday beauty of Southern Europe. At a young age, Boerwinkel developed a passion for drawing, further fueled by the summers he spent in Italy.
Boerwinkel studied at the prestigious Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, graduating in 1975. In his early years, he primarily worked with large-format oil paints, but from the late 1980s onward, he found pastel his true means of expression.
Boerwinkel builds his images in layers of pastel, which he then fixes in place. The artist scratches, polishes, and wipes into his works to reveal underlying colors, creating a remarkable depth and vibrancy.
The subjects of his pastels are often inspired by daily life in France and Italy. With his subtle use of color, loose contours, and warm, observant gaze, Boerwinkel evokes a sense of familiarity and tranquility.
He attaches great importance to keeping traditions alive and succeeds in building a bridge between the past and the present, giving his art a timeless appearance.
