- About the artist
Hans Giesen (1942, Kerkrade) is a Dutch painter, draughtsman, collagist, sculptor, and sound artist. He paints figures and still lifes. From 1958 to 1962, he attended the Stadsacadmie (City Academy) Maastricht. In 1962 and 1963, he studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. In the period 1963-1965, he took courses at the famous art institute Ateliers 63 in Haarlem. Giesen studied under Wessel Couzijn, Pieter Defesche and Ger Lataster. He is a versatile artist with varied interests: from 1970 to 1972, he studied philosophy of culture at the University of Amsterdam. He lives and works in Amsterdam, and since 1985 he also has a studio on the island of Paros (Greece). He has had numerous exhibitions, for instance at Pulchri Studio (2012), The Hague; at Galerie De Compagnie (2016), Dordrecht. Giesen experimented with glass, wood and iron reliefs. He was the first to produce sound objects, in the Bijlmer/Fleerde. Many of these objects are owned by the government, municipalities or are in private collections (Schunck, Heerlen).
