Gerard Huysman (born 17 February 1953 in Zaandam) is a Dutch painter and draftsman, living and working in Alphen aan den Rijn. For decades, he has been building an oeuvre in which light and atmosphere are central, often with urban architecture and landscapes as subjects.
After studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (1973–1978), Huysman developed a recognizable style in which realism and poetry come together. At first glance, his subjects are mundane—a street, an old building, a tranquil landscape—but the emphasis is on the way in which light brings these scenes to life and transforms them.
His work is characterized by a subtle treatment of light and color. One moment he captures the cool, clear blue of an open sky, the next the warm, sultry evening light or the soft gray of a rain shower. His oil paintings on panel show a subtle layering and richness of detail, while his chalk drawings on paper leave a direct, sensitive impression.
Huysman's paintings are part of various collections in the Netherlands, including universities, companies and private collectors. He regularly exhibits at galleries and art fairs and continues to actively work on new paintings and drawings from his studio in Alphen aan den Rijn.
