  • About the artist

Jan Hendrik Verheijen (Utrecht, 1778 – Utrecht, 1846) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and etcher, best known for his finely detailed cityscapes and architectural representations. His work is considered to belong to the classicist-romantic genre, with a special attention to detail, perspective and historical accuracy. Within the Utrecht painting tradition, Verheijen occupies a prominent place as a documentalist of the cityscape in a time of great change.

Verheijen was trained at the Utrecht Drawing Academy and was interested in architecture and city life from an early age. He made numerous drawings, watercolours and paintings of squares, churches, canals and streets, often with a lively addition of figures in contemporary or 17th-century costume. In this way he managed to give his work a both historicising and recognisable atmosphere.

His compositions are carefully constructed, with strict lines and a bright use of colour. The precision with which he recorded buildings and street scenes makes his work valuable for historical research: his paintings function as visual archives of pre-industrial Utrecht. At the same time, he was able to enliven the scenes with human activity and subtle lighting effects, which elevates his work beyond purely topographical representation.

Verheijen was active in local art circles and also had students, with whom he passed on his expertise to a new generation of draughtsmen. Although he was best known in Utrecht, his work can now be found in various Dutch museums and city archives.

Jan Hendrik Verheijen leaves behind a meticulous, atmospheric and historically valuable oeuvre. He was a chronicler of his city, who with great care and a sense of composition depicted a vanished world — an artist who made history visible and tangible.
