- About the artworkDodit Artawan
b. 1978, Batubulan, Indonesia
Balinese artist, Dodit Artawan is known for his hyperrealist oil paintings.
Dodit’s works reflect the dynamics of mass tourism in his hometown, mainly how Western consumerism has influenced the local traditions of his hometown. Dodit portrays Barbie and her friends in their impossibly perfect figures and flawless complexions against the glistening glass towers of gin, vodkas and whiskeys to convey the glamour and hedonism that is so intoxicating. And to some extent, his works also embed an aspect of his personal lifestyle on the island. “I am appropriating the lifestyle of consumerism that is so unavoidable… (and yet) celebrated by the individual who becomes part of it…”
Born and based in Bali, Dodit Artawan studied fine art at the Indonesian Art Institute Denpasar Bali and started his career in 2011, breaking away from traditional Balinese art in order to seek new expressions for contemporary art in Bali. Dodit has widely exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Italy and the USA. Dodit won the Bronze Award at the IWS Malaysia 1st International Watercolour Biennale (KL) in 2018. - About the artist
Dodit Artawan is a Balinese artist whose hyperrealist oil paintings capture the surreal intersection between tropical tradition and global consumerism. Born in Batubulan, a village famed for its rich cultural performances and stone carving traditions, Dodit grew up in a setting steeped in heritage. Yet it was the growing tide of mass tourism and the omnipresence of Western brands that left a deeper imprint on his artistic imagination.
Graduating from the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) in Denpasar, Dodit made a conscious decision early in his career to step beyond the confines of conventional Balinese art. His work, launched in earnest in 2011, is a vivid commentary on the commodification of paradise. Through meticulously rendered scenes of Barbie dolls lounging among luxury liquor bottles, or idealized Western figures juxtaposed with symbols of local culture, Dodit constructs a mirror that reflects both aspiration and irony.
His paintings are not only critiques but confessions. Dodit himself admits to being both seduced by and critical of the very lifestyle he depicts. “I am appropriating the lifestyle of consumerism that is so unavoidable… and yet celebrated by the individual who becomes part of it,” he explains. In this tension lies the potency of his art: glossy, seductive, and layered with social commentary.
Artawan’s work has resonated far beyond Bali. He has exhibited in solo and group shows across Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Italy, and the United States, and in 2018, received the Bronze Award at the IWS Malaysia 1st International Watercolour Biennale in Kuala Lumpur. Today, he continues to live and work in Bali, transforming its shifting cultural landscape into bold visual narratives that both dazzle and provoke.
Dodit Artawan stands as a unique voice in contemporary Southeast Asian art—a chronicler of a paradise caught between ritual and retail, spirit and spectacle.
