Origional frame - About the artist
Johannes Bernardus (Johan) Ponsioen was a Dutch artist, born in Nijmegen, on July 25, 1900. Initially Ponsioen studied to be a teacher, just like his father was. Later he devoted his life to drawing and painting. His artistic career can be divided in three parts, in which he tended to work differently. The first period ran until 1934, and is known as his academic period. He painted in an academic, romantic and sometimes impressionist style. The second period ran until 1947 and was known as the period of so-called magic realism, a development typically Dutch. The third distincted part ran until 1969 and became an eclectic period; Ponsioens preference for achieving the perfect image of details shifted towards an 'alla prima' style of working. Ponsioen passed away on April 26, 1969, in the Dutch Tiel.
