  • About the artist

Anna Veegens was born in 1850 in the Netherlands and grew into a gifted artist at a time when female artists still had to fight for recognition. She studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where she studied between 1872 and 1875 in the so-called ladies' class, a separate course specifically intended for women. She excelled during her studies: in 1874 she won a first prize in The Hague, an early recognition of her talent.

Veegens developed into a versatile artist with a preference for figure studies, children's portraits (which formed her main subject) and still lifes. Her work was characterised by a great sensitivity to detail, a subtle use of colour and a warm, intimate approach to her subjects. Especially in her children's portraits she managed to capture the vulnerability and liveliness of her young models in a moving way.

Anna Veegens not only worked in the Netherlands, but also drew inspiration from abroad. She lived and worked in Italy and France, and lived for a time in Brussels, where she was awarded a gold medal at a prestigious exhibition in 1889. Later she settled in the Netherlands again, first in The Hague and eventually in Bilthoven, where she continued her artistic career.

Although she celebrated successes and received recognition during her life, her name is less well-known today. Nevertheless, her oeuvre forms a valuable part of the Dutch art historical heritage, with works that have mainly found their way into private collections.

Anna Veegens died in 1922, but her artistic legacy still bears witness to the dedication and craftsmanship of an artist who managed to find her own way within the painting of her time.
