- About the artist
Frank E Hollywood (born Frank 't Hoen, Utrecht, 1980s) is a Dutch contemporary artist who consciously explores the tension between autonomous art and commercial visual culture. His work explores where high art and mass consumption intersect—and collide.
Growing up in the visual explosion of the 1980s, he was strongly shaped by American cartoons, branding, and pop iconography. These influences are still palpable in his use of color, sharply defined shapes, and theatrical compositions. His artistic roots lie in street art, where speed, directness, and visual impact were central. In the late 1990s, he transitioned to canvas, partly after workshops at the St. Joost School of Fine Art & Design in Breda. He has lived and worked in Amsterdam for over ten years.
Frank E Hollywood is often described as an artist at the intersection of hyperrealism, pop art, and what he himself characterizes as a form of "erotic minimalism." His technique is refined and classically trained—oil on Belgian linen, carefully composed skin tones, dramatic lighting—but his visual language is distinctly contemporary.
Female portraits form the heart of his oeuvre. He places his models in a tension between past and present: 16th-century ruffs and Renaissance references are combined with icons of contemporary luxury such as Chanel or Louis Vuitton. This layering creates a contemporary "Modern Renaissance," in which he strives for the ideal of the uomo universale: an artist who refuses to be limited to a single medium. In addition to paintings, he also creates marble sculptures and other three-dimensional works.
Beneath the aesthetic perfection often lies social criticism. His work serves as a mirror for a culture in which identity, status, and self-image are closely linked to brands and consumption. In series like Neo Gilded Age, Masked, and Retro Pop, he explores themes such as façade, seduction, and the theatrical presentation of the self. Frank E. Hollywood is also a familiar face in the Dutch media, appearing on programs like "Sterren op het Doek," "Dream School," and "MTV Moneymakers." His work is exhibited both nationally and internationally and is included in private collections where art, fashion, and lifestyle intersect.
With his distinctive signature, he constantly balances between irony and seriousness, classic craftsmanship and contemporary visual culture—precisely where art most sharply reflects the zeitgeist.
