About Ronald Zuurmond
Ronald Zuurmond (1964–) is a contemporary Dutch painter renowned for his textured surfaces and exploration of space and silence within his works. Born in The Hague in 1964, he initially pursued studies in sociology at the Catholic University Brabant from 1984 to 1990. Following this, he attended the Academy for Art in Tilburg for a year and subsequently took private lessons from painter Jan Beutener for nearly two years.
Zuurmond’s oeuvre encompasses traditional themes such as landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits. His paintings are characterized by a process-intensive approach, involving the application and removal of multiple layers of oil paint to create depth and texture. This technique allows underlying layers to emerge, resulting in a rich interplay of colors and forms.
In recent years, Zuurmond has expanded his artistic practice to include collages. He repurposes fragments from unsuccessful canvases, cutting out figurative forms and mounting them on new surfaces, thereby giving them renewed context and meaning.
Throughout his career, Zuurmond has received several accolades, and his work has been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions. Ronald Zuurmond’s paintings are held in various collections, including: Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Schunck Museum in Heerlen and the Dordrechts Museum.
Ronald Zuurmond continues to live and work in Breda, Netherlands, where he persistently explores the boundaries of painting, delving into the nuances of form, color, and the interplay between presence and absence.

Ronald Zuurmond (born 1964, The Hague) is a Dutch painter known for his layered, introspective works that combine memory, decay, and beauty. After studying Cultural Sociology at Tilburg University, he pursued his true calling at the Tilburg Art Academy, where he developed his visual language.
Zuurmond's paintings often originate from existing images—photos, reproductions, or old paintings—which he edits, paints over, and transforms into new, timeless compositions. In this method, time itself plays a key role: layers of paint, traces of previous versions, and subtle remnants of the original image remain visible, creating a poetic tension between past and present.
His oeuvre exudes melancholy and contemplation, but also a deep love of color, texture, and painting as a craft. Zuurmond's work is included in various private and public collections and is regularly exhibited nationally and internationally, where it is praised for its tranquil power and layered imagination.
