Louis Visser (Amsterdam, 1952) is a Dutch painter, known for his impressionistic cityscapes of Amsterdam. He works exclusively 'en plein air' and captures both well-known and lesser-known locations in the city with a smooth and fresh touch.
Early Life and Education
As a child, Visser already filled notepads with drawings. Although there were periods in which he was less active with drawing and painting, his passion for art remained. In 1997, after seeing the work of Frans Koppelaar in Galerie Vieleers, he decided to focus entirely on painting on location. In addition to his work as a Dutch teacher, he started drawing on location, and in 2002 he switched to oil paintings.
Career and Method
Visser is a familiar face in the Amsterdam streetscape. With his easel and palette, he captures the dynamics and atmosphere of the city on location. His subjects vary from iconic buildings such as the Royal Palace on Dam Square to atmospheric streetscapes and squares. His impressionistic style is characterized by a vibrant use of color and loose brushstrokes, which allows him to capture the essence of the moment.
Recognition and Exhibitions
In 2021, a documentary about Visser was broadcast on AT5, Amsterdam's local television channel, focusing on his working method and passion for the city. His work has been shown in various galleries and is part of private collections.
Influences and Inspiration
Inspired by the 'en plein air' technique and the work of contemporaries, Visser strives to capture the constant changes and unique character of Amsterdam. His paintings offer a fresh perspective on the city and invite the viewer to look at familiar places with new eyes.
With his dedication to capturing Amsterdam city life, Louis Visser has acquired a unique place in Dutch painting.
