  • About the artwork
Willem Bol (1950) is a Dutch artist and the youngest son of painter Kees Bol. He began painting and drawing at a young age, including creating works for tourists in France. Bol developed a versatile style encompassing still lifes, portraits, and surreal compositions, known for their technical skill and emotional depth. His work continues to be appreciated by collectors and art enthusiasts and remains a source of inspiration within the Dutch art world.

In this painting, Willem Bol captures the quiet beauty of a winter landscape with a powerful, almost graphic simplicity. A broad horizon divides the canvas into two halves: the dark, ominous sky above and the snow-covered landscape below. The bare trees and the interplay of white, green, and brown create a sense of stillness and space—a moment of calm in the transition between seasons.

The restrained composition and controlled use of color demonstrate Bol’s ability to achieve maximum expression with minimal means. His brushwork is precise and deliberate, giving the work an almost symbolic strength. Although realistic in subject, the painting conveys an introspective, nearly meditative atmosphere that is characteristic of Bol’s later work.

This artwork comes from the collection of the Eindhoven Museum. As part of the transition to Museumpark Vonk, selected works are being deaccessioned, allowing the museum to fully focus on the history and identity of Eindhoven.

  • About the artist

Willem Bol (born in 1950) is a Dutch painter known for his refined still lifes and landscapes in oil paint. As the son of the renowned painter Kees Bol, he grew up in an artistic environment, but managed to break away from this heritage early on and develop his own recognizable signature.

His work moves between realism and stillness. In his landscapes, Bol captures not only the visible but, above all, the atmosphere and the moment—often characterized by soft lighting and restrained use of color. His still lifes show a similar attention to composition and balance, in which everyday objects take on an almost meditative quality.

Bol worked and exhibited both in the Netherlands, including in Eindhoven, and in France, where he drew inspiration from the landscape and the light. His attitude to life is often described as that of a “free spirit”: independent, intuitive, and little bound by conventions, both in his art and in his personal life.

With his paintings, Willem Bol seeks simplicity, tranquility, and authenticity. His oeuvre shows how tradition and personal freedom can come together in work that is both accessible and layered.
