Era un pittore post-impressionista olandese, figlio del pittore romantico Kaspar Karsen. Dopo essere stato apprendista da suo padre, ha iniziato a seguire i corsi alla Royal Academy di Amsterdam. Karsen è noto per le sue composizioni lunatiche con fattorie e spesso una singola figura solitaria. Ha fatto parte del movimento letterario "Tachtigers". Il pittore morì nel 1941.
