  In the foreground, we see a woman in a light blue coat and red skirt walking a path through a park-like area, where the bare trees and traces of snow or wet grass suggest a cold winter day. The atmosphere is melancholic, yet also enlivened by the warm glow of lights and colors radiating from the fairground tent. At the center of the painting is a large merry-go-round with a red-and-blue striped tent and illuminated horses turning. The rounded shapes and warm tones contrast sharply with the cool grays of the sky and the bare trees, giving the work an almost cinematic, dreamlike quality. On the right, slightly in the background, we recognize the Eiffel Tower, subtly rising from the Parisian sky. Beyond the fairground, other attractions appear to be present, and the shadows of visitors convey a sense of movement and life. Hordijk is known for his depictions of urban entertainment, circuses, and fairground scenes, in which he captures the light, rhythm, and atmosphere of the moment. This work fits in perfectly: it is a play of light, colour and emotion, in which the joy of the fair forms a poetic counterbalance to the grey, almost gloomy evening sky.
  
• A proposito di opere artista
  Gerardus Hordijk è nato nel 1899 a L'Aia, nei Paesi Bassi. Era conosciuto come artista grafico, illustratore e pittore. Hordijk ha studiato ingegneria a Delft, ma continua a seguire corsi all'Accademia di Belle Arti dell'Aia. Si diploma in entrambi gli istituti. Nel 1927 Hordijk si trasferisce a Parigi e viene a vivere nello stesso complesso di studi di Piet Mondriaan all'epoca; Rue du Part. Qui produce principalmente dipinti ad olio, gouaches e acquerelli ispirati al balletto. Ma sviluppa anche uno stile di lavoro personale che incorpora molto ocra, mentre il suo lavoro successivo riesuma una serenità più semplice. A Hordijk piaceva anche dipingere soggetti classici figurativi come bagnanti in Costa Azzurra, paesaggi urbani e nature morte di fiori. Nel 1930 Hordijk sposa la moglie americana Margaret Mathews, che all'epoca era in visita in Francia e stava imparando la lingua. La coppia visse ad Amsterdam per un po', prima di trasferirsi a New York nel 1940 e cambiare il cognome in Hordyk per scopi di marketing. Proprio come Hordijk, anche Mondriaan si trasferì a New York nel 1940. I due si incontravano regolarmente e si scrivevano lettere. Nel 2006, il mercante d'arte Marcel Gieling ha scoperto l'eredità quasi completa di Hordijk in una villa vuota; conteneva centinaia di dipinti e acquerelli, accanto a lettere di Mondriaan. Dopo che Hordyk si trasferì di nuovo ad Amsterdam, la sua popolarità crebbe. Il 15 ottobre 1958, Hordyk morì nella stessa città.
