Signed Diary of Willem van Konijnenburg, Volume 23 (1918) owned by Kunstmuseum Den Haag shows that Willem van Konijnenburg had this dancing figure in mind as the cover for the Jan Toorop issue of Wendingen (second pic.), the famous architecture and art magazine that was published from 1918 to 1932. Richard Roland Holst (1868-1838) drew the attention of the editorial secretary Hendrik Wijdeveld to Willem van Konijnenburg as a suitable designer for the cover of the Toorop issue that was to be published in December 1918. This assignment marks the end of Van Konijnenburg's isolation within The Hague. Van Konijnenburg and Toorop know each other. Toorop loses out in an 'watercolor bet' between the two gentlemen. The drawing Dancer comes from the family property of Willem van Konijnenburg. The first owner was Jacoba van der Vegt, the artist's favorite niece.

Willem van Konijnenburg è nato a L'Aia l'11 febbraio 1868. È stato un pittore, acquerellista, illustratore, grafico e incisore olandese. Ha studiato all'Accademia delle Arti dell'Aia. Dopo la sua formazione ha lavorato a Maastricht, Limburgo, Scheveningen e persino a Parigi. Fu allievo di Arnoud Gerkens, Eduard Kerling e Johan Philip Koelman. Ma le sue principali lezioni d'arte furono date dalla madre di Willem. Van Konijnenburg morì all'Aia il 28 febbraio 1943.
