23.5 x 31.5 cm - A proposito di opere artistaCharles Wirgman è nato il 31 agosto del 1832. È stato un artista e fumettista inglese, creatore del Japan Punch e illustratore in Cina e nel periodo Meiji in Giappone per l'Illustrated London News. Wirgman era il figlio maggiore di Ferdinand Charles Wirgman (1806-1857) e fratello di Theodore Blake Wirgman. Ha sposato Ozawa Kane nel 1863, hanno avuto un figlio. Wirgman arrivò in Giappone nel 1861 come corrispondente per l'Illustrated London News e visse a Yokohama dal 1861 fino alla sua morte. Pubblicò la prima rivista in Giappone, il Japan Punch, mensile tra il 1862 e la primavera del 1887. La rivista era scritta in modo umoristico, spesso satirico, ed era illustrata con le vignette di Wirgman. Wirgman formò una partnership chiamata "Beato & Wirgman, Artists and Photographers" con Felice Beato dal 1864 al 1867. Wirgman ha nuovamente prodotto illustrazioni derivate dalle fotografie di Beato mentre Beato ha fotografato alcuni degli schizzi di Wirgman e altre opere Wirgman ha insegnato tecniche di disegno e pittura in stile occidentale a un certo numero di artisti giapponesi, in particolare l'artista ukiyo-e Kobayashi Kiyochika. Fu anche per breve tempo un tutore d'inglese, in particolare del futuro ammiraglio Togo, allora giovane cadetto. Nel 1860 accompagnò l'inviato britannico Sir Ernest Satow in numerosi viaggi in Giappone, come descritto nel Diplomat di Satow in Giappone. Charles Wirgman morì l'8 febbraio 1891. Fu sepolto nel cimitero generale degli esteri di Yokohama.
