Over de kunstenaar

Abraham van Strij (1753, Dordrecht – 1826, Dordrecht) was a decorative painter, aquarellist, genre painter, printmaker and engraver. He was taught to paint by his father Leendert van Strij, and by Joris Ponse. Abraham joined his father’s workshop. He also studied at the Schildersacademie in Antwerp. He became famous for his interior paintings. In 1783, he married Sophia Catharina Vermeulen. Van Strij was a co-founder, in 1774, of the Dordrecht Guild of St Luke and later its director. A number of excellent paintings by Abraham van Strij are included in The Dordrechts Museum, among others Drawing lesson (c. 1800) and Reading woman near the window. His son Abraham was a painter as well.
