Arnold Boonen (1669, Dordrecht – 1729, Amsterdam), also called ‘Boontje’, was a Dutch painter, who was active in Dordrecht, Germany (Frankfurt am Main, Mainz, Darmstadt) from 1694 to1695, and in Amsterdam between 1695 and 1729. He was a genre painter, whose subjects were figures and fruit still lifes, but he was especially famous as a portraitist. Arnold Boonen was a teacher to amongst others his younger brother Jasper Boonen and Cornelis Troost. Some of his pictures representing governors/regents (‘regentenstukken’) are included in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
