Over de kunstenaar

Christoffel Lubienitzki (1659 Szczecin - 1729 Amsterdam) took lessons in drawing from his youth. He moved to Amsterdam in 1675 where he was apprenticed to the painter Adriaen Backer (1635/6-84) Initially he made an income from military service because he was unable to support himself by painting alone. In 1693 he married into a well-known Dutch family and he was introduced to Amsterdam’s artistic circles.

Christoffel worked in the tradition of 17th-century Dutch painting and he became a celebrated painter of city-dwellers, scholars and the Dutch clergy. He also created a series of genre compositions, fantastic landscapes and biblical scenes. His drawings are included in many European collections.
