Over de kunstenaar

Johannes Cornelis (Jan) van Ham (1992 - 1989) was a Dutch artist who is best known for his ceramics. Showing an abundance of talent at young age, Van Ham was hired at a pottery in his birthplace Gouda as a plate painter. As he aged, Van Ham was schooled at the pottery. When he came in contact with the Rhodian-painting technique, his designs flourished. Soon after, he started working at the plate bakery Zenith, where he applied geometrical patterns in his designs, inspired by his trips to Spain and Morocco. He even designed a cup in honor of the Olympics in 1928. He established his own pottery with a few friends, called 'De Vier Paddenstoelen', which he sold around 1941. Afterwards, Jan started painting, mainly at Texel, Terschelling and Ameland, three islands in the Wadden area. The main subject of his paintings there were landscapes, farms and seascapes and Dutch villages. He spent the last years of his life as a painter, primarily living in Utrecht.
