Joseph Csaky

Biografie

Over de kunstenaar

Joseph Csaky, born in Hungary (1888), attended the Academy of applied arts there for 1.5 years, out of dissatisfaction he left. First worked for Laszlo Kimnach in Budapest, then also worked for a period with Zsolnay (1907).

Csaky left with 40 Francs largely on foot for Paris. He had all kinds of shitty jobs there until he
ended up in the artists' colony 'La Ruche' and came into contact with all kinds of artists such as Delauney, Picasso and Lipchitz.

Csaky was immediately captivated by Cubism and managed to convert it successfully into his images.

He was one of the first to apply the Cubist principles three-dimensionally. He made his debut in 1911 at the Salon Societé Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Later he also exhibited at the Salon d'Automne (1911-1912) and the Salon des Artistes Indépendants (1913-1914, 1920, 1923).

He had immediate success and was also an active member of the 'Section d'Or' artists' group between 1911 - 1914.

In the 1920s he is also associated with de Stijl and Purism. After 1928 his work changed, his work became less cubist, he worked more in a figurative style and his lines became more rounded. He exhibited throughout Europe.
Csaky was one of the founders, like the Martel brothers, of l'Unions des Artistes Modernes (UAM) in 1929.
He also collaborated with Jacques Doucet in the late 1920s for 'Studio House'.

Joseph Csaky is considered one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century and a pioneer of modern sculpture. His work can be seen in all major museums. In the Netherlands, the Kröller Muller museum has a few beautiful sculptures and a drawing by Joseph Csaky in their collection.
