Over de kunstenaar

Martin van Cleve (Antwerp, 1527 – Antwerp, 1581), also spelt Marten/Maarten/Maerten van Cleve/Cleef, was a Flemish painter and draughtsman active in Antwerp between 1551 and 1581. He was the son of Willem van Cleve the Elder who had become a master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in1518. Martin studied under his father and, according to Karel van Mander’s Schilder-Boeck, under Frans Floris. Martin Cleve is mainly known for his genre scenes with peasants and landscapes, which show a certain resemblance to the work of Pieter Breugel the Elder. Van Cleve was a leading Flemish painter, whose subjects and compositions influenced Pieter Brueghel the Younger and other genre painters of his generation. He did not study in Italy. Therefore his work was not influenced by Italian Mannerism. In 1556, he married Maria de Greve. The couple had four sons who all became painters. One of Martin’s pupils may have been Hans Jordaens.
