    The merchant and painter Simon van Brakel (1816-1884) was a member of the artistsociety Pictura and belonged to the School of Dordrecht, dominated by the painter J.C. Schotel. As a painter Simon was taught by his father Gerrit van Brakel, also a merchant as well as a painter of seascapes and member of Pictura as well. Oil on panel, signed.

    Simon van Brakel foi um pintor de origem holandesa, nascido em 24 de dezembro de 1816 em Dordrecht, Holanda. Ele era conhecido como comerciante e pintor. Temas favoritos de sua mão incluem paisagens marinhas, navios e vistas do rio. Em 1869, o trabalho de van Brakels foi exibido na Exposition générale des Beaux Arts. Van Brakel viveu na cidade de Dordrecht toda a sua vida e morreu no dia 5 de fevereiro de 1884.
