About the artist
Wallerant Vaillant was a painter and graphic artist born in 1623 in Lille. He is known as one of the first practicers of the Mezzotint. Furthermore he was a very successful portraitist, he played a big role in the development of the pastel portrait. He was a pupil of Erasmus Quellinus. He travelled a lot around Europe, he visited Antwerp, Middelburg, Amsterdam, Frankfurt am Main, Heidelberg and Paris. In 1664 he moved to Amsterdam where he stayed until he died in 1677. He was the teacher of several family members such as Andries Valliant, Bernard Vallaint, Jacques Vaillant and Jean II Vaillaint.
