This painting reveals the inspiration the artist got from French landscape painters. The trees are used as repoussoir. Because of this play with light and shadow, the attention of the viewer automatically draws to the resting and grazing cows. It is known Bilders set up this painting in the open fields and worked out any detail in the comfort of his own studio. In contrast with contemporaries as Anton Mauve, who had a preference for grey landscapes, Bilder's work contains a light and airy atmosphere.
Sobre el artista
Gerard Bilders (1838-1865) nació en Utrecht. Recibió sus primeras lecciones de dibujo de su padre, el paisajista Johannes Bilders. Durante gran parte de la juventud de Gerard, la familia Bilders vivió en Oosterbeek, un pueblo cerca de Arnhem al que más tarde atrajeron a muchos pintores. Los paisajes fueron el principal interés de Bilders desde el principio. Se mudó a La Haya en 1857, donde copió los paisajes de Paulus Potter con ganado en el museo Mauritshuis. También visitó Suiza, donde estudió con el pintor de paisajes y animales Charles Humbert. Bilders solía ir a Oosterbeek a pintar al aire libre durante el verano, junto con artistas como Anton Mauve y Paul Gabriel de la Escuela de La Haya. Intentaron capturar la atmósfera del paisaje, como los pintores de la Escuela de Barbizon en Francia a quienes admiraban. Bilders murió a los 26 años de tuberculosis.
