Masterly - The Dutch in Milano
Who doesn’t know the Salone del Mobile in Milan, the most important design fair of the year? From all over the world leading designers, young talent and pioneers gather in the Italian city to show and to admire a broad range of design. The Salone truly sets the international bar for exclusive design and high quality products.
This event has been taking place in Milan for over 50 years and this year's edition is coming up soon, from April 4 tot 9.
Traditionnally, the Netherlands are represented with their own pavilion: Masterly – The Dutch in Milano – in the fascinating Palazzo Francesco Turati, situated in the heart of theb city. This palace was built between 1873 and 1876 at the request of Count Fransesco Turati, a well-respected tradesman within the cotton industry. Here you will find the crème de la crème of Dutch designers, artists, artisan producers and eminent design agencies.
In this monumental palazzo, historical and contemporary design melt together, evoking a breathtaking show. This year's edition for example, features a beautiful still life by the Dutch photographer Dik Nicolai.
Dik Nicolai - 'Sunday afternoon'
His stunning work 'Sunday afternoon' was heavily influenced by historical themes, it feels like 17th century Dutch painters like Willem Claeszn. Heda have returned to this era!

If you look closely at Nicolai's work you will notice all kinds of interesting details like the velvety texture of the fungus on the cheese or the juicy fruit, just waiting to be eaten.
Next to the works by Dik Nicolai you will also find objects from Royal Tichelaar Makkum, Gelderland Furniture, Royal Delft, Edward van Vliet and many more famous names.
The event Masterly is an initiative by Nicole Uniquole and is organised in close collaboration with the Dutch Embassy, the consulate-general in Milan and the Milan Chamber of Commerce. Uniquole has had a long-standing career as a curator, a concept developer and an organiser of (inter)national exhibitions and events specializing in Dutch design and fashion, both historical and contemporary.
