    Pedersen studied at the royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and afterwards spent twelve years travelling in Southeast and South Asia, painting portraits of all the different peoples he met; Indians, Sri Lankans, Malay, Arabs, Thai, Indonesians and Chinese.

    Von Pedersen estudou na Academia de Artes de Copenhagen antes de viajar primeiro para a Alemanha e depois para Londres, onde conheceu seu irmão mais velho, que trabalhava em uma plantação de tabaco em Sumatra. Lá ele decidiu em 1898 visitar seu irmão em Sumatra, onde chegou após uma breve parada no Sri Lanka. De lá, ele viajou e pintou em Penang, Cingapura, Java e Sião. No caminho de volta para a Dinamarca, ele parou em Bombaim, onde pintou o retrato do Maharadja de Burdwan. Von Pedersen passou vinte anos no Sul e no Sudeste Asiático, pintando retratos de todos os diferentes povos do Sudeste Asiático; Indianos, Sri Lanka, malaios, árabes, tailandeses, indonésios e chineses. Ele também pintou antigos templos, paisagens, especialmente vulcões e paisagens urbanas de muitos lugares diferentes que visitou na Ásia.
