Henri Jean-Joseph Ubaghs (1852-1937) Portrait of a Balinese model wearing batik and gold bracelets Signed lower right, J. Ubaghs Oil on canvas, 78 x 56 cm Jean Ubaghs was born in Liège where he studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts and later became a professor at the same Académie. On April 8th, 1886, Ubaghs married Clara Marie Albertine L’hoest from Liège. Ubaghs painted this same Indonesian model more often as well as another model from the Orient. He is not known to have travelled outside Europe or even outside Belgium.

Jean Ubaghs è nato a Liegi dove ha studiato all'Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts e successivamente è diventato professore presso la stessa Académie. L'8 aprile 1886 Ubaghs sposò Clara Marie Albertine L'hoest di Liegi. Ubaghs ha dipinto più spesso questo stesso modello indonesiano e un altro modello orientale. Non è noto che abbia viaggiato fuori dall'Europa e nemmeno fuori dal Belgio.
