- Sobre arteThis fine and large Louis XV breadbasket displays trelliswork, a typical feature The Hague silversmiths would use for baskets at that time. Together with rocaille motifs and cable border the basket is a good example of mid 18th century quality silverware.
Its maker, François van Stapele (1698-1775), became a master silversmith in The Hague in 1723. His son Martinus (1731- ca. 1803/1806) followed in his father’s footsteps and later on also his grandson Reynier (1764-1795) became a silversmith. François van Stapele made a similar, but slightly smaller breadbasket three years later, in 1764, which is now in the collection of the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague (cf. Pijzel, 2005, cat. nr. 3, p. 138-139).
