Nicolaas van der Waay (Amsterdam, October 15, 1855 – Amsterdam, December 18, 1936) was a Dutch (decoration) painter, watercolorist, draftsman and lithographer. He was employed between 1870 and 1936.
He designed sculptors (portraits) for coins and stamps, including those of the still young Queen Wilhelmina. He also designed the first official banknote of 10 guilders (1904-1920).
Van der Waay is best known for the allegorical representations he made for the Gouden Koets. He received his first drawing lessons from L.J.H. Koopman, whose daughter he would later marry.
His oeuvre spans genre painting, landscapes, portraits, history depictions and cityscapes.
