  This early 20th century painting captures a serene and intimate moment of a young woman immersed in reading, seated comfortably in a rotan chair. She wears a soft blue dress, its gentle folds accentuating her relaxed posture. Draped over the chair, a red cardigan contrasts vibrantly with the blue of her dress, adding warmth to the scene. Her face is softly illuminated by sunlight streaming through the trees.

  Lammert van der Tonge was a son of the Jewish diamond sharpener and started drawing at an early age, but, according to his father's wishes, he followed in his footsteps as a diamond cutter. But he preferred to become a painter.
  
  He learned the painting trade from Eduard Frankfort. After the death of his father, he studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam where he was taught by August Allebé and Nicolaas van der Waay. Lammert van der Tonge lived and worked in Amsterdam until he traveled throughout the Netherlands to paint. His subjects were peasant interiors, landscapes and portraits. Later in his career he started painting flower still lifes. From around 1902 Van der Tonge settled in Laren, where his paintings were well marketed, and became a member of the Club De Tien. In 1913, together with Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig and Willy Sluiter, among others, he was one of the founders of the annual exhibitions at the hotel/art hall Hamdorff.

  Lammert van der Tonge (Amsterdam, 24 febbraio 1871 – Laren, 11 dicembre 1937) è stato un pittore olandese, associato alla Scuola Laren. Ha firmato le sue opere come L. v. d. Lingua.

  Lammert van der Tonge nacque come figlio del tagliatore di diamanti ebreo Levie Lammert van der Tonge (1823-1894) e Elsje Soesman Rudelsheim. Sebbene abbia mostrato interesse per il disegno fin dalla tenera età, inizialmente ha seguito le orme di suo padre ed è diventato un tagliatore di diamanti. Tuttavia, ha ricevuto lezioni di disegno da Eduard Frankfort e Maurits Niekerk, che lo hanno incoraggiato a sviluppare ulteriormente il suo talento artistico.

  Poco dopo la morte di suo padre, superò l'esame di ammissione alla Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, dove fu formato tra il 1894 e il 1898 da noti artisti come August Allebé, Carel Dake, Ferdinand Leenhoff e Nicolaas van der Waay.

  Nel 1902 Van der Tonge ricevette il prestigioso sussidio reale per la pittura. Dopo periodi a Drenthe e Gelderland, tra gli altri, alla fine si stabilì nel Gooi. Nel 1905 sposò la pronipote Clarence Koster (1878-1943), che lavorò come insegnante e traduttrice. La coppia viveva nella colonia di artisti di Laren, dove si circondavano di altri artisti.

  Van der Tonge si specializzò in dipinti ad olio di interni (contadini), studi di figure e ritratti. Più tardi nella sua carriera si concentrò maggiormente sulle nature morte floreali. È stato membro dell'Associazione degli artisti Sint Lucas e della prestigiosa Arti et Amicitiae. Dal 1899 prese parte a mostre nazionali e internazionali, tra cui le mostre di Living Masters, Saint Luke e l'Esposizione Mondiale del 1913 a Gand.

  Ricevette una menzione d'onore a Santiago (1910) e vinse una medaglia d'argento all'Esposizione Internazionale Panama-Pacifico di San Francisco (1915). Nello stesso anno il Museo di Dordrechts organizza una mostra personale del suo lavoro.

  In occasione del giubileo d'argento della regina Guglielmina nel 1923, Van der Tonge fu incaricato di dipingere una rappresentazione della chiesa diretta a Staphorst per un album con più di 200 opere d'arte, donato alla regina a nome del popolo olandese.

  In Laren, Van der Tonge ha svolto un ruolo attivo nella comunità degli artisti. Nel 1903, insieme a Emanuël van Beever, André Broedelet, Henk de Court Onderwater, Franz Deutmann e August Le Gras, tra gli altri, fu uno dei fondatori del club di pittura "De Tien". Nel 1913, insieme ad artisti come Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig e Willy Sluiter, fu uno dei fondatori delle mostre annuali nell'hotel/sala d'arte Hamdorff.

  Lammert van der Tonge morì all'età di 66 anni e fu sepolto nel cimitero ebraico di Muiderberg. A Laren, il Van der Tongelaan prende il nome da lui in suo onore.
