In the foreground, we see a woman in a light blue coat and red skirt walking a path through a park-like area, where the bare trees and traces of snow or wet grass suggest a cold winter day. The atmosphere is melancholic, yet also enlivened by the warm glow of lights and colors radiating from the fairground tent. At the center of the painting is a large merry-go-round with a red-and-blue striped tent and illuminated horses turning. The rounded shapes and warm tones contrast sharply with the cool grays of the sky and the bare trees, giving the work an almost cinematic, dreamlike quality. On the right, slightly in the background, we recognize the Eiffel Tower, subtly rising from the Parisian sky. Beyond the fairground, other attractions appear to be present, and the shadows of visitors convey a sense of movement and life. Hordijk is known for his depictions of urban entertainment, circuses, and fairground scenes, in which he captures the light, rhythm, and atmosphere of the moment. This work fits in perfectly: it is a play of light, colour and emotion, in which the joy of the fair forms a poetic counterbalance to the grey, almost gloomy evening sky.
Gerardus Hordijk werd in 1899 in Den Haag geboren. Hij was bekend als graficus, illustrator en schilder. Hordijk studeerde techniek in Delft, maar volgt ook lessen aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag. Hij studeert af aan beide instellingen.
In 1927 verhuist Hordijk naar Parijs en komt te wonen in hetzelfde ateliercomplex als Piet Mondriaan in die tijd; Rue du Départ. Hier maakt hij vooral olieverfschilderijen, gouaches en aquarellen, geïnspireerd op het ballet. Maar hij ontwikkelt ook een persoonlijke werkstijl met veel oker, terwijl zijn latere werk een meer eenvoudige sereniteit uitstraalt. Hordijk schildert ook graag figuratieve klassieke onderwerpen zoals badgasten aan de Côte d'Azur, stadsgezichten en bloemstillevens.
In 1930 trouwt Hordijk met zijn Amerikaanse vrouw Margaret Mathews, die op bezoek was in Frankrijk en daar de taal leerde. Het echtpaar woont een tijdje in Amsterdam, voordat ze in 1940 naar New York verhuizen en hun achternaam veranderen in Hordyk voor marketingdoeleinden. Net als Hordijk verhuisde ook Mondriaan in 1940 naar New York. De twee ontmoetten elkaar regelmatig en schreven elkaar brieven.
In 2006 ontdekte de kunsthandelaar Marcel Gieling in een leegstaande villa de bijna volledige erfenis van Hordijk; er stonden honderden schilderijen en aquarellen in, naast brieven van Mondriaan.
Nadat Hordyk weer naar Amsterdam was verhuisd, groeide zijn populariteit alleen maar. Op 15 oktober 1958 overleed Hordyk in dezelfde stad.
