• Over kunstwerk
  Arnout Colnot was a member of the 'Bergense school'. Colnot started out as an apprentice decoration painter and developed further. His works is characterized by coarse shapes, dark colors and influences from Cubism. Cubism uses shifting points of view. A table can be viewed from different angles. From above when standing, from the side when sitting, or from below when picking up something from the floor. Cubists try to incorporate this into a painting.
  
  The expressionism of the Bergen School. In expressionism the artist tries to express his feelings, his experiences, for the observer by a certain distortion of reality. Arnout Colnot is seen as the most distinctive representative of the Bergen school due to his powerful, dark cubist expressionism.

  The painting is very dark in color. But pay attention to the different colors that come to life with the sunlight in the painting, blue, red, yellow etc.

• Over kunstenaar

  Arnout Colnot (1887) was een leerling in de werkplaats van Jan Maandag in Amsterdam, hier werd hij opgeleid in de kunst. De technieken leerde hij niet in de werkplaats van Maandag, maar meestal zelf. Colnot was schilder, tekenaar, graficus en lithograaf.

  Hij verhuisde naar Bergen waar hij lid werd van de Bergense school. De Bergense school staat bekend om zijn expressionistische stijl met kubistische invloeden en donkere tinten. Andere kunstenaars die zich bij de Bergense school hebben aangesloten zijn Leo Gestel, John Rädecker en Charley Toorop. Colnot had een zeer breed scala aan onderwerpen die hij schilderde, zoals landlandschappen, portretten en interieurs. Later leerde Colnot Kees Boendemakers en Rinus Duin zijn technieken.

  Colton verhuisde naar Amsterdam en later terug naar Bergen, waar hij in 1983 overleed.
