  Peter Donkersloot, geboren in 1959 te Arnhem op de Bakenbergseweg 136, is de zoon van Hilda Blom (1933) en Piet Donkersloot (1930-1986). Zijn vader Piet was een gerenommeerd illustrator in de jaren zestig, bekend om zijn werk voor het damesblad Margriet en andere publicaties.

  Piet's thuisstudio op de zolderverdieping was de plek waar hij zijn vakmanschap uitoefende, vaak met de jonge Peter op schoot, die gefascineerd toekeek hoe zijn vader verhalen tot leven bracht met zijn illustraties.

  Deze vroege ervaringen vormden een diepe indruk op Peter, die herinneringen koestert aan het zien van zijn vader die schilderijen van landschappen en romantische taferelen creëerde. Deze momenten legden de basis voor Peter's eigen schildercarrière.

  Peter's moeder, Hilda Blom, ontwikkelde zich tot een bekende landschapsschilderes, en het artistieke talent werd ook gedeeld door zijn zus Anne Donkersloot (1964) en broer Wouter Verburgt (1970), die beiden kunstenaars werden.

  Na zijn opleiding aan de kunstacademie in Arnhem, werkte Peter bij het gerenommeerde reclamebureau 'Fransen, Hey en Veldman'. Daar verfijnde hij zijn technieken in de ontwerp- en tekenafdeling, waar hij de kunst van realistisch tekenen en schilderen leerde door het dagelijks uitwerken van ideeën voor commercials en advertenties.

  Uiteindelijk verliet Peter de reclamewereld om zich volledig te wijden aan het vrij schilderen in een modern-figuratieve stijl. Hij heeft deze stijl tot op heden behouden en staat bekend om zijn gespecialiseerde, realistische en figuratieve schilderwerk. Geïnspireerd door 17e-eeuwse meesters, schildert Peter in transparante lagen van donker naar licht. Hoewel de traditionele opbouw van zijn schilderijen behouden blijft, stelt de moderne, sneldrogende verf hem in staat sneller te werken dan zijn voorgangers in de olieverfschilderkunst.
