Edward Antoon Portielje (1861-1949) - Back from fishing

Edward Antoon Portielje, a Belgian painter, born in Antwerp in an artist family. He was taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp by Charles Verlat. As impressionism grew stronger, Portielje continued to paint in a realistic way. He often chose genre scenes and anecdotal subjects from society, but also made this particularly beautiful beach scene, the return of fishing. Striking about this work, oil on canvas, is not only the impressive cloud and light scene, but also the signature. This work has been signed twice, both right and bottom left.

Edward Antoon Portielje, pittore belga, nato ad Anversa in una famiglia di artisti. Fu insegnato all'Ecole des Beaux-Arts di Anversa da Charles Verlat. Man mano che l'impressionismo si rafforzava, Portielje continuò a dipingere in modo realistico. Scelse spesso scene di genere e soggetti aneddotici della società, ma rese anche particolarmente bella questa scena da spiaggia, il ritorno della pesca.
