    Edward Antoon Portielje (1861-1949) - Back from fishing

    Edward Antoon Portielje, a Belgian painter, born in Antwerp in an artist family. He was taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp by Charles Verlat. As impressionism grew stronger, Portielje continued to paint in a realistic way. He often chose genre scenes and anecdotal subjects from society, but also made this particularly beautiful beach scene, the return of fishing. Striking about this work, oil on canvas, is not only the impressive cloud and light scene, but also the signature. This work has been signed twice, both right and bottom left.

    Edward Antoon Portielje, een Belgische schilder, geboren in Antwerpen in een kunstenaarsfamilie. Hij werd onderwezen aan de Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Antwerpen door Charles Verlat. Naarmate het impressionisme sterker werd, bleef Portielje schilderen op een realistische manier. Hij koos vaak voor genretaferelen en anekdotische onderwerpen uit de maatschappij, maar maakte ook dit bijzonder mooie strandtafereel, de terugkeer van de visserij.
