10 artworks under €1,000

Many people are under the impression that art, classic or contemporary, is an expensive hobby reserved for the happy few. But is it? We'll show you just 10 of the more than 450 artworks featured on Gallerease that you can buy for less than €1000. 

'Evolutie droom' (1993) (main image). Of course, you could buy the €3950 gouache but if you don’t have that kind of money or rather buy multiple things from this list, then you should opt for the edition of 150 in which this work of art was created. For a mere €550 at Galerie Mia Joosten, you can own this joyful piece by one of the most diverse Dutch artists from the 20th century. Known as a painter, draughtsman, glass painter and monumental artist, Hans Truijen (1928-2005) saw his work featured in several internationally acclaimed collections, both public and private.

In 1997 he was even knighted for his contribution to (Dutch) painting!  

_{Calm (2017), P-A Sandström €300}

A wall-mounted, raku-fired ceramic sculpture resembling a human face radiating an atmosphere of calmness, peace and inner strength.

Every sculpture made by P-A Sandström (Sweden, 1970) is hand-built and accentuated by smaller or larger surfaces applied with different glazes, giving each work a unique character. Not unsurprising that his work has been exhibited widely across Europe and the USA and is part of numerous private and corporate collections. 

_{‘Amsterdam, Het IJ, Pampus’ (1785-1791), Matthias de Sallieth €625}

Prague-born, Matthias de Sallieth (1749-1791) moved to the Northern Netherlands in 1778, after having worked as an engraver in Vienna and Paris. Despite his love for Rotterdam and Delfshaven, De Sallieth made this copper engraving after a drawing by Carel Frederik Bendorp, who in turn, copied his drawing from a painting by Abraham Storck. A unique print showing an unprecedented view familiar to many!

_{David Bowie and Duncan, Amstel Hotel, Nico Koster €195}

What more do we need to say about Nico Koster, which we didn’t already highlight in this interview? A Dutch legendary photographer Koster has captured more celebrities than many of us will even read about. Best-known are perhaps his photos taken of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and this photo of David Bowie, who passed away on January 10, 2016. Printed in a larger edition, these photos are iconic and it’s astonishing you can own these for as little as this.

Wietske van Leeuwen (Rotterdam, 1965) is a graduate from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. She creates strikingly baroque objects, made up of many small prints of shells and fruit, which remind of the curio cabinets that were in fashion in the 17th century and admired by her. A master working with ceramic she also sculpts combinations of ceramic "garnitures”.

Her work can be found in numerous collections and has been showcased in countless solo and group exhibitions. ‘Golfbalpot’ is offered by Galerie Carla Koch, a leading gallery for ceramic for over 25 years.

'Blue Source' (right), created entirely from natural matter, was made in 2015 by another Van Leeuwen, Rob van Leeuwen (1959). Van Leeuwen, having started his career as a KLM ground engineer, travelled frequently and was captured by a deep respect and fascination for the beauty of nature. Self-taught, he uses this connection with nature in developing his skills and expressing himself, often falling back on the four elements. His work has been exhibited at galleries throughout the Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland and is featured in several private collections.

_{The Whitewater (1986), James Brown €850}

Lithograph, printed on hessian/burlap laid onto Arches paper. Created by Los Angeles-born, American artist James Brown (1951). Brown is a graduate from the renowned École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and has had many solo exhibitions over the years in galleries in Mexico City, Brussels, Paris and many others.

This graphic work was made in an edition of 90, of which this one is offered by Hans den Hollander Prints.

Jantzen is an advanced graduate from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. Disillusioned by corporate life she gave up her job at Mattel Company and trained herself in the art of fine art photography. Her style is unique and borders on the edge of abstract, her subjects directly taken from nature.

Who hasn’t been to the Colosseum in Rome? The biggest difference with this print and the present is the complete lack of cars and scooterbikes on the print. This unique, antique print shows Rome as it was in the time of travelers on their Grand Tour.
