Stefan Schwartz (1851-1924) was a Slovakian sculptor and medallist. Initially working in a metal factory in Pest, he moved to Vienna where he learned chasing, a metalwork technique. From 1869 to 1874 he studied at the art academy in Vienna, where he was apprenticed to Otto König. There, he became an art teacher in 1876. Along with Rudolf Mayer, he ran his own school in 1875. He was honored with a golden medal at the Internationalen Kunstausstellung in Berlin in 1896. He became renowned for the emperor’s portrait, featured on Austrian money. Nowadays most of his work is included in the Museum für angewandte Kunst in Vienna.
