About the artist

He initially studied under H. Lauenstein and H. Crola at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, later with G. Schönleber at the art academy Karlsruhe, in 1908 he received a scholarship for the Villa Romana in Florence. He was active in Kiel and Möltenort since 1889 and was appointed professor of the landscape class at the Kassel Art Academy in 1912. After he retired, he returned to Kiel in 1930.

Burmester's landscape motifs always originate from his most immediate surroundings, they are a prime example of early German Impressionism.
