About the artist

Hermanus Heuvel was born in Nijmegen in 1736 as son of Johannes Heuvel and Elisabeth van Hagen. In 1766 he became a master-silversmith in Amsterdam. That same year he married Anna Sibilla Ruyghoud. The couple lived on the Egelantierstraat in Amsterdam. Hermanus manufactured candlesticks, baskets, sauceboats and tobacco jars until 1780. Later he specialized in smaller objects such as table bells and chamber sticks. His son Johannes also became a silversmith. Johannes held his workshop at the Lauriergracht in Amsterdam, where his father Hermanus died in 1810.
