About the artist

Willem Carel Nakken was a Dutch painter, watercolorist and draftsman from The Hague. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and the Academy of Arts in Antwerp. He was tutored by Anthonie Franciscus Dona, who was primarily known for his paintings of cattle. Nakken painted genre scenes, landscapes, cityscapes, still-lifes and animals, more specifically horses. He worked in The Hague, The Ardennes and Limburg and made multiple trips to Le Have and Honfleur in Normandy to paint there. Nakken was a member of the art associations Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and Pulchri Studio in The Hague. His work can be seen in multiple museums such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem and the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam
