Mason en Putman 153 - About the artist
Bram van Velde (1895-1981) was a Dutch painter and an important representative of abstract expressionism. He was born on 19 October 1895 in Zoeterwoude and grew up in a poor family. Van Velde started his career as a house painter, but his artistic talent was soon discovered. Thanks to a patron, he was able to develop further as an artist.
Van Velde lived and worked in various European countries, including Germany, France and Spain. His time in Paris in particular had a great influence on his work. His paintings are characterised by an intense colour palette, abstract shapes and an almost meditative simplicity. His style evolved over the years, but remained true to his quest for expression and inner harmony.
Although Van Velde's work was initially not widely recognised, he received increasing appreciation after the Second World War, especially in France. He exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums and his work is still considered an important contribution to modern art. Bram van Velde died on December 28, 1981 in Grimaud, France.
