NB Scene from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights Dream. The scene gives an account of the bewitched fairy queen Titania who falls in love with Nick Bottom, the weaver, whose head has been transformed into a donkey. - About the artist
Arie Teeuwisse was a Dutch sculptor and illustrator. Born in Amsterdam, he studied at the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheid (Institute for Applied Arts) from 1936 to 1940. Later, he studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts), but had to stop and go into hiding in 1943. He went into hiding at the zoo Artis, near by the bear accommodations. Artis, along with his friendship with Jaap Kaas, who is often called ‘the sculptor of Artis’, has certainly influenced his work. After the war, in 1945, Teeuwisse continued his education and in 1947 graduated. He is mostly known for his sculptures of animals and persons. From 1947 on he also illustrated and made comics for the KRO-guide. Teeuwisse was a teacher at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine arts) in Rotterdam from 1963 to 1982 and he was a member of the artist associations Arti et Amicitiae and the Dutch Society of Sculptors.
