- Sur l'oeuvre d'artBeautiful animal sculpture of a seated monkey depicted as pharaoh. It's hand-formed of terracotta by the French artist H. Gaillard, who was active in the 1920-1930's Art Deco period.
The monkey is beautifully made, the stylising and also the expression of the monkey is great.
The monkey is signed "H. Gaillard" on the right hip.
The fact the monkey is depicted as a Pharaoh was not unusual at the time, however this is a rare example. After the discovery of the Toetanchamon tombe by Howard Carter in 1922, the artefacts of Ancient Egypt became a hype, in art, fashion and literature, during the 1920's-1930's. This sitting monkey is a nice example.
