L'Hiver Vue D'Hollande, copper engraving by Pierre Charles Canot, after a painting by Hendrik Jacobsz Dubbels. Published in London 1755. Later hand-coloured. Measures 44 x 34 cm. Canot (1710 - 1777), originally French, was a member of the British Incorporated Society of Artists, and was elected associate engraver when the title was introduced by London's Royal Academy in 1770. Canot exhibited his work in the Society of Artists, the Free Society and the Royal Academy. As a skilled artist he plated several works after Willem van de Velde, Ludolf Bakhuysen, David Teniers, Claude Lorrain, and here Hendrik Dubbels. Dubbels (1620- 1676) is known as a meritorious marine painter. But besides numerous works with subjects such as shipwrecks, river views and harbours, he also produced ice views. The fact that this engraving was made a century after Dubbels' painting shows how popular it must have been - even in the 18th century. At a time when the economic tide had turned in the Netherlands, people were nostalgic for the Golden Age. Price: Euro 975
