A proposito di opere artista
Antonij (Anton) Mauve (1838-1888) è nato a Zaandam. A 16 anni andò ad Haarlem dove fu apprendista di Pieter Frederik van Os, uno specialista nella pittura di bovini, seguito da Wouter Verschuur che dipinse cavalli. Mauve e Paul Gabriel andavano spesso in campagna per dipingere dalla natura. A vent'anni iniziò a visitare Oosterbeek, un villaggio che attirò molti artisti. Nel 1871 prese uno studio a L'Aia. Per un po' insegnò a Vincent van Gogh, al quale era imparentato per matrimonio. Nel 1882, Mauve iniziò a visitare Laren per l'estate, per poi trasferirsi lì nel 1885. A quel tempo il suo lavoro era ampiamente conosciuto e ricercato dai collezionisti in Olanda e all'estero. I suoi paesaggi con le pecore erano particolarmente popolari in America; curiosamente, è stata fatta una distinzione tra "pecore che arrivano" e "pecore che vanno", leggermente meno costose. I paesaggi evocativi di Mauve lo collocano saldamente nella scuola dell'Aia.
