Andreas Hohwü was born in Gråsten on the German/Danish border as the son of clockmaker Thomas Howhü. He later became the apprentice of the famous Dutch clockmaker Hendrik Johan Kessels (1781-1849) in Hamburg. Following that he moved to Paris to work for the watchmaker Louis Breguet (1804-1883) until 1840 when he left for Amsterdam to start his own business. He manufactured pendulum clocks and chronometer timepieces and was awarded two Dutch honorary titles for his workshop practices.
