Over de kunstenaar

Michel Seuphor, a pseudonym of Ferdinand Louis Berckelaers, was a Belgian avant-garde artist. He made abstract paintings but also wrote and published several works on abstract paintings and artists. Seuphor established the Belgian literary magazine ‘Het Overzicht’ in 1921 and co-founded the abstract artists group ‘Cercle et Carré’ in 1929, whose members included artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Le Corbusier. Amongst his circle of friends were Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondriaan, whose work he also studied extensively. His two books ‘Dictionnaire de la peinture abstraite’ (1957) and ‘La peinture abstraite, sa génèse, son expansion’ (1962) form a very important contribution to the existing knowledge on abstract art.
