- Over kunstenaar
Sebiha Demir (1978) graduated from the Aki-Artez Academy for Art & Design (Enschede, the Netherlands). AKI ArtEZ Academy for Art & Design in Enschede is the smallest academy in the Netherlands. The AKI was founded in the 1960s and to this day remains indebted to its founding principles.
The works of Demir are inspired by the increasing threat of human behaviour to exotic animals and the ambiguous relationship between human and animal. In her works, Demir expresses this ambiguity not only through the manner in which she presents the animals, but also through the use of materials. The relaxed or playful postures and glowing, almost fuzzy, surfaces of the gorillas, panthers and bears, give them a pet-like quality. Only when you approach the sculptures, you experience that appearances are deceptive and notice the rough .22 bullet-sleeves that Demir uses for her works.
