Hidden Treasures at the PAN: part II
‘Boats in the Harbour’ by Willem Paerels (1878-1962) at Studio 2000 (stand 63) is a stunning work of art. The beauty of this painting struck me when I took a closer look at it. Some fishermen are in their boats but at the same you notice that the clouds are dark, as if a storm is coming, so you start to wonder what these fishermen are doing. Are they preparing their boats for fishing or did they just arrive safely back in the harbour?

Willem Paerels was a Dutch-Belgian artist and is known especially for his harbour paintings. This painting was done in an expressionist style; a style he adopted during the latter part of his career.
At the beautifully decorated stand of Daatselaar Fine Arts and Antiques (stand 37) you will find two impressive 18th century canons, set up as if they are protecting the booth. These attractive miniature canons are signed “M.L. Everard fecit 1774”. What is interesting to know is that these kinds of canons were hardly ever signed or dated at all. That makes these objects very interesting as well as rare. Inside the stand also sits a miniature mortar on a wooden carriage that is to be sold alongside the two canons. Look very closely and you will notice all kinds of details!
Two canon at Daatselaar Fine Arts and Antiques
Daatselaar Fine Arts and Antiques also houses a collection of fine antique furniture. This beautiful Dutch Louis Seize secretaire à abattant, made around 1790, definitely stands out. Take some time to study the lacquered panels, they have been skilfully decorated with landscape scenes, flowers and birds.

At Kunsthandel E.J. Van Wisselingh & Co (stand 110), Renate de Winter (pictures) was proud to present to me a watercolour by Kees Verwey (1900-1995), amongst many other delightful items. This bright work was made in 1967 and remains in an excellent condition, the flowers really stand out.

Another striking painting that caught my eye is this work by Jan Mankes (1889-1920), it belonged to the artist's sister, Popkje de Jonge - Mankes. This painting, titled ‘Boomstronk’, was made in 1914 and comes with an interesting provenance. During his sadly short lifetime, Mankes produced around 150 works of art. He was know for actually being able to depict ‘silence’; the Dutch writer Richard Roland Holst described him as ‘Hollands meest verstilde schilder’ (Holland quietest painter) in 1923. Allow your eyes to adjust to Mankes' uniquely delicate painterly style, and you will notice the beautiful silence that emerges from this work.

At Eduard Planting Gallery (stand 131) you will find works from many different periods. Terry O’Neill (1938) is best known for the iconic photo of Brigitte Bardot, taken on the set of 'The Legend of Frenchie King’ (1971). However, he also photographed another famous actress: Audrey Hepburn, in the South of France during the filming of 'Two for the Road' on the 4th of September 1966. This photograph shows the actress relaxing in a swimming pool, it is truly a timeless piece.

The still-life photographs from the Contemplation Series by Dutch photographer Marie - Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier are also worth taking a look at in this stand. In 2016, Marie-Jeanne started experimenting with a digital back for her classic and old fashioned Hasselblad camera which she had been using since 1998. Since then, she has added a whole new series to her work: realistic, poetic still-life’s in colour, echoing the work of the Old Masters whilst using objects from her personal and family collection (including the painting she uses as a background). The result is stunning and very attractive!
